Vitreoscilla Filiformis Modulates Human Dendritic Cell Phenotype and Cytokine Production A Gueniche1, J Peguet-Navarro2, E Colomb2, C Vincent2, L Breton1 1L'Oral Recherche, Clichy, France 2Hpital Ed Herriot, EA 37-32, Lyon, France Vitreoscilla filiformis Vf, ATCC15551 ; is a Gram negative bacterium found in spa waters. Vf biomass balances cutaneous immune homeostasis, especially when applied onto skin of atopic patients. Since cutaneous dendritic cells DC ; are involved in the inflammatory process, we investigated the effects of Vf biomass and LPS-free fraction on in vitro DC phenotype and cytokine production. DC were generated from monocytes MoDC ; cultured for 6 days with GM-CSF and IL-4. The cells were treated, or not, with either Vf preparations at different concentrations 5, 2.5 or 0.5%, v v ; or LPS from E. Coli 1, 10 microg ml ; as positive control. Two days later, phenotypic modifications were assessed by flow cytometry analysis. Cytokine production in cell supernatants was analysed using the cytokine bead array kit. At day 6, MoDC displayed an immature phenotype, as assessed by the absence or low expression of DC-Lamp, CD83 and CD86. In contrast, the expression of all these maturation markers was significantly increased by Vf biomass, LPS from E.Coli and, to a less extent, Vf LPS-free fraction. MoDC stimulated by LPS from E.Coli produced high levels of IL8 , TNFalpha, IL10 and IL-12 p70 and the IL10 IL12 ratio ranged from 1 to 6. Very interestingly, no IL12 p70 but high levels of IL-10 were detectable in the presence of Vf biomass and LPS free fraction, leading to a very high IL-10 IL-12 ratio. This particular immunoregulatory cytokine pattern might thus hamper effector T cell activation and inflammatory response. The results indicate a possible mode of action for this therapeutic bacterium, because leukocytes estrace.
The authors concluded that there was no evidence to favor "early" over "late" decompressive surgery. This conclusion derives from a summary of the studies that compared outcomes over different time-to-surgery intervals, as well as observations from studies reporting very late 4 weeks post-injury ; surgical intervention see table 5 ; . Most of the studies summarized in this paper define "early" as 24 hours after injury. It is important to remember in comparing these different approaches to management that in all cases, the patient is at least immobilized.

Perpetuated in pharmacy school. However, some patterns of use change due to the demands of the curriculum. The most frequently stated stressors were the need to maintain a high grade point average and financial concerns. Students indicate a wide variety of strategies for coping with the stressors, but about one-third of students report taking medications to reduce anxiety and depression. Implications: The results of the survey are useful in developing programming to mentor students about how to manage stress and anxiety associated with the pharmacy curriculum. The Lifestyle of Pharmacy Students and Their Knowledge of Obesity Prevention. Marion K. Slack, The University of Arizona; Maria Virgen, The University of Arizona; Cesar Marroquin, The University of Arizona. Purpose: To describe the lifestyle of pharmacy students and determine their knowledge related to obesity prevention. Methods: Pharmacy students completed a paper and pencil questionnaire on diet e.g. types of foods such as sweetened drinks consumed ; , level of exercise, and identifying the health benefits that were most important to them. Also included were questions on knowledge of factors related to weight gain e.g. medications ; , relationship of obesity to mortality, physical activity, and heart disease. Results: A total of 194 students 42% men and 58% women ; completed the questionnaire. The majority 57% ; were 20-25 years of age and white 82% ; . BMI was significantly p 5 ; greater for third year students mean 5 24; SD 5 4.3 ; than for first year students mean 5 22.6; SD 5 3.4 ; . There were no differences between classes on diet and exercise status. Students had consumed an average of 3.3 types of fruits and vegetables daily, 1.6 8-ounce servings of sweetened drinks, and just over one 1.2 ; servings of whole grains daily. Physical activity was also similar across classes; overall students engaged in moderate activity 2.6 SD 5 1.9 ; times weekly. Men 61% ; selected decreased risk of cardiovascular disease and women 84% ; selected control weight as the health benefit that was most important to them. Third year students scored better p 5 0.018 ; than first year students on the knowledge questions, but all scored relatively low 49% ; . Conclusion: Students, on average, engaged in limited exercise, had a diet low in fruits and vegetables, and had limited knowledge of obesity prevention. toring program ; , mentee- and mentor- perceived importance of mentoring, mentorship interaction behaviors by the mentor and mentee e.g., provision of career mentoring and frequency of visits to the mentor ; , congruence between the mentor and mentee e.g., alignment of personal values ; , and mentoring outcomes e.g., professional development ; . Implications: The authors are currently testing the mentee-related constructs of this framework, and intend to test the mentor-related constructs in the near future. While the constructs of this framework were operationalized with the pharmacy education context in mind, the framework may find application in other settings. Moving away from Grades. Arjun P. Dutta, Pacific University; Robert P. Rosenow, Pacific University; Susan M. Stein, Pacific University; Vanessa Dillman, Pacific University; Ajay Koomer, Pacific University; Willard Kneip, Pacific University. ``To grade or not to grade?'' has beleaguered healthcare educators since the seventies. Medical, dental, and law literature have espoused a ``pass fail'' P F ; system in lieu of grades. Students preferred P F while faculty argued both ways. Both medical and dental literature bore positive correlation between P F -academic performance, boards, and residencies. Although, there is a dearth of evidence regarding the merits of P F pharmacy education, more schools are using it for experiential and other electives. The PU, SOP has made a conscious decision to eschew traditional grading in favor of P F for all didactic and experiential courses in their three-year curriculum. The following describes their evaluation process: Progression of students towards achievement of programmatic outcomes will be measured via formative and summative assessments. Additionally, a cumulative year-end assessment for the two didactic years and the third clinical year will be conducted. PU will use ``P F'' for recording student achievement. The standard for individual student achievement is 90%. Assessments will also include a group assessment which will contribute 5% points towards an individual's overall score. If a student does not achieve 90%, then he she will attend a mandatory review session on a scheduled extended-learning day followed by a written reassessment to achieve 90% competency. Students failing to achieve 90% on the extended-learning day will attend summer extended-learning where they will be required to achieve 90% in order to continue in the program. The faculty will reassess the P F system at the end of the first year and report significant correlations.

Interbody fusion following ACD for treatment of cervical radiculopathy or cervical myelopathy is thought to have several advantages compared with discectomy alone.37, 41 There is no consensus, however, regarding the optimum substrate for cervical fusion.46 Iliac crest autografts are most commonly used12, 13, 38 and yield fusion rates between 83 and 97%.7, 33 Bone graft harvesting at the iliac crest, however, results in additional patient-related pain and discomfort.4, 32, 35 Recently, RTCs have been introduced as a new fusion device applicable in the anterior cervical spine. Clinical experience, thus far, is limited, and at this time these devices have not been approved by the Food and Drug Administration.2, 10, 21 The purpose of this study was to assess the safety and efficacy of RTC fusion compared with standard iliac crest autograft grafting in the treatment of cervical disc disease and famotidine, for example, estrace and provera.

The World Health Organisation and French paediatricians have condemned the French government's decision to suspend hepatitis B vaccinations in schools. Dr Bernard Kouchner, secretary of state for health, made the decision earlier this month as a temporary measure, pending an investigation into the possibility that hepatitis B vaccine could cause multiple sclerosis or other forms of demyelination in the central nervous system. Vaccination of infants and adults at risk will continue. Dr Kouchner based his decision on studies in France and Britain hinting at an increased risk of demyelinating reactions in the central nervous system during the two months after vaccination of school age children. Most experts maintain that the results of these studies are not significant, and vaccination is known to prevent infection and its possible consequences-- cirrhosis and liver cancer. The World Health Organisation warned that the French government's decision may lead to a loss of public confidence in the hepatitis B vaccine, leading to other countries abandoning its use or deciding not to introduce such a programme. According to the organisation, the use of more than a billion doses of the vaccine since 1989 has shown an exceptional record of safety and efficacy. In France the National Union of School and University Physicians stated last week that it was "extremely surprised" by a decision that may discredit a vaccination whose usefulness has not been questioned by the scientific community. The National Union of Paediatricians followed suit and denounced the "total incoherence" of the decision. "How can we explain to mothers that infants, who have little risk of contracting hepatitis B by sexual contact, should be vaccinated but that . vaccination campaigns should be stopped in schools?" said Professor Jean Grunberg, president of the union and fexofenadine.

Send a message to John at JFistere email.msn for instructions. John has contributed a whole lot to the fight against prostate cancer. John is a part-time Executive Director for PCREF. 6699 Alvarado Road San Diego, CA 92120 Tel: 619-287-8866 Fax: 619-287-8890 The PSA will reflect to a great extent your cancer activity and should be monitored closely. This doesn't mean that you should be getting a PSA test every other day. Dr. E. David Crawford says that some men become "PSA junkies" who may shop around and get several PSAs, hoping to find a lab that returns a test that suits them. Depending on your diagnosis, stage, Gleason and other factors, you may not need a PSA more often than once every six months. Of course if it appears that your PSA is rising fast, then it should be done more often. You should know your clinical stage and your Gleason score and know their significance. Knowing these numbers, you should consult the Partin and Narayan Tables in Chapter Six and determine the predictions. Learning What You Need to Know Before you can make a good decision about any treatment you must be informed. We are talking about your life and how much longer you may live. How much longer you live may depend on the decisions you make. There are several good books on prostate cancer. Read them and learn. If you have a computer, log onto the various websites and learn. A couple of the better sites are the Prostate Problems Help List PHML ; and the Prostate Problems Mailing List PPML ; . These sites are actually E-Mail sites. There are several hundred patients and relatives who post questions, problems and answers on these lists every day. A great many of the posts are from Individuals who have had all of the various treatments. Their first hand experiences can help you enormously. If you are going to have a treatment, what better way to find out what to expect than from someone who has had that treatment? Several doctors monitor the PHML and the PPML and answer questions. They usually point out that their answers and advice cannot take the place of a face-to-face consultation with your doctor. The subscriptions to PHML and PPML are free. All you need is a computer and a modem.
If we look at a child displaying negative behavior as a 'monster' or feel that because a child may be rambunctious at times that we must automatically resort to medicating them, then we have taken a negativistic attitude that will surely be passed on to the child and pseudoephedrine.

Sensitivity is one of the most important parameters to be investigated. The concentration of 0.5 mg mL was regarded as 100% and this solution was diluted 10, 100, 1000, and 10, 000 times. CE-MS electropherograms were acquired in the order of increasing concentration and are shown in Figure 3. Total Ion Current TIC ; electropherograms can be seen Figure 3a, Selected Ion Mode SIM ; electropherograms in Figure 3b. The 0.1 % level is hardly detected in the TIC electropherogram, although this limit can be improved by employing mathematical algorithms like CODA. 2 ; However, 0.01% can be easily detected with SIM, but, of course, this only applies when the molecular mass of the impurity is known. In our experience, the sensitivity of the applied CE-MS system is suitable for detecting impurities at lower than 0.1% level when appropriate data filtering is used. For example, with the Xcalibur software, it is possible to plot the masses of ions that appeared as a function of time. In this way, the present ions can be revealed.
